Another assignment is to recall and sketch our first day of school. I can’t remember much of my first years of school, but I did recall this particular day. I was a first grader in 1946, just after WW2. and I lived on the Oregon coast. The Navy had a large fleet of dirigibles, or blimps, as we called them to do surveillance over the Pacific looking for Japanese submarines.
One day when we were at recess, one of these came right over our playground and it was awesome to see. They were huge.

Published August 2, 2014 by penandpopcornIn June we camped at Kah-nee-ta on the Warm Springs Indian Reservation.
It is a beautiful and well maintained campground with a huge swimming pool of lovely warm water. Some campers stay in the teepees in the teepee village but we prefer the comforts of our trailer.
In July we camped at Maryhill State Park which is on the Columbia River in Washington. On the way to Goldendale for supplies we came across this sign on Highway 97.
Urban sketcher sketching
Published July 14, 2014 by penandpopcornSaturday was the 2nd Annual West Coast Urban Sketchers Sketchcrawl. We met up across from the Portland Art Museum and then went our individual ways to sketch. I did a little Smart car and then went on to the Farmer’s Market and found a colorful lavender stand. We all met up again at noon to share sketchbook views and have a group picture. The event continued after lunch but it was way too hot for me to continue. I added watercolor to my sketches after I got home.
